3 tips for safe, fun & effective at home workouts

How incredible is it that we’re able to train, workout & move from the comfort of our own homes thanks to technology, home gyms & empty bedrooms that have been turned into ‘make shift gyms’?

Over the past year, I’ve been training exclusively from my own lounge room with our LFN community & I love the convenience of being able to workout when it works for me. It’s important to know though that yes, at home workouts are super fun, effective & convenient and I want everyone to be doing them if they can! But it’s also important we get the set-up, our equipment & ourselves right so we can do these workouts safely.

1.    Start at the bottom- get your flooring right!

At Limitless Fitness & Nutrition, we run daily live-streamed group fitness classes for women. I’ve worked with hundreds of women over the past year, but one thing I see time and time again is that at the very beginning of starting our workouts, sometimes the flooring just isn’t quite right. When you move & workout, you want a soft, absorbent surface, so if you’re running, marching, jumping or landing, your body will absorb the impact of your movements.

If you’re training on tiles or hard wood flooring, it’s essential you have something between yourself & your floor to protect your muscles and joints. These flooring options from Bunning’s or Kmart are a cost-effective way of doing that.

  2.    Choose supportive footwear

When it comes to group fitness classes or any type of training whether live or online, it’s essential you have supportive footwear that will also absorb impact from your body.

My personal favourite brands of supportive footwear are Asics and Brooks- these also are preferred brand for the women I work with too. My secret though, for an extra level of support is to wear Netball shoes- they’re designed to stabilise your ankles & stop you from rolling them. You’ll notice they feel even more absorbent to impact when moving around.

Trust me, you won’t go back once you wear them. If you’re a runner or enjoy walking, these shoes too are a great choice!

Don’t be afraid to seek professional advice about your footwear, a Podiatrist is a great place to start.

 3.  Have enough space for you & your workouts

It’s true that home workouts can be done with a lot less space than you think! From what I’ve seen over the past year, the more space you have access to, the better. This gives you leeway to run a little further, to move a little wider and get more from your workout.

Be sure to keep your space as clear as you can from hazards such as weights, furniture or anything that you could trip on. Of course, this is easier said than done, but the easier and more clear your workout space is for your to access & get to, the more fun you’ll be able to have during your workout!

So there you go- 3 tips for you to ensure you’re getting the most from your online workouts! Keep them in mind the next time you logon for a Live-Streamed Pilates session, Retro-robics class or class of your choosing!
