How to make your at home workouts more motivating

Get up & moving from the comfort of your own living room with these 4 tips!

On-demand and online workouts are absolutely here to stay! So many people & communities are still experiencing lockdowns & luckily, we have access to countless live & on-demand workouts to keep us moving.

However, one thing I hear from a number of the clients I work with is “I just can’t find the motivation to workout at home”. If this is you, I want to tell you that it’s going to be ok, and I guarantee after reading this, you’ll find a new found motivation to get into your home workouts!

So, are you ready for a motivation kick-start? Let’s go!

1.    Do what you enjoy.

This does seem like a simple time to begin with, but too often than not, we often think we ‘have to’ workout in a particular way. Not the case! The most important thing to look for in a home workout program is sustainability, fun & if it’s going to be something you enjoy. Consider what you enjoy doing. If you love dance, high intensity workouts, strength based training or Pilates- do that. The best types of workout programs will be the ones that can offer you a variety to start with and from there, you can figure out what works for you!

2.    Variety is the spice of life!

Speaking of variety, a sure-fire way to disengage with an exercise program is to get bored (and we all know how that feels!). It’s important you incorporate variety into your home workouts to keep your motivation high. For instance, on Mondays you may do a high intensity cardio class, on Tuesdays, you may slow it down with more Pilates based programs, on Wednesdays you may walk, on Thursdays you may have a rest day & on Fridays you may do a strength based workout (this is not considering any limitations, injuries or pregnancies). Do your best to choose a variety of formats in your weekly workout schedule! Not only will your mind thank you, but your body will love the challenge too.

3.    Find a community.

You know that feeling when you’re working out with your friends & you’re pushing each other to go further, faster & harder? An online group fitness community can offer you the same feeling and connection during your workouts. If you’re someone who loves being around other people, there are a range of options when it comes to live-streamed fitness classes that will connect you not only with a workout but with others too.

4.    Have a set space where your workouts happen.

You know when the house is a mess, there are things everywhere and you feel a little overwhelmed? It’s not really the most conducive time for a workout.

If you can, have a set room or space where your workouts happen. Whether it’s a spare bedroom, your outdoor area or the garage, it’s ok! Keep the space as clear as you can and prior to setting up for your workout, do your best to clear that space to set your mind up for the workout ahead.

Be sure to keep your space as clear as you can from hazards such as weights, furniture or anything that you could trip on. Of course, this is easier said than done, but the easier and more clear your workout space is for your to access & get to, the more fun you’ll be able to have during your workout!

Enjoy your workouts & enjoy your new found motivation!
